For the Love of Music

Performances are a part of being a musician. Whether it’s a spring concert or a solo or an honor band performance…performances are a big piece of what we do.

Naturally, many rehearsals center around getting music to a point where it is “performance ready”. Individual practice often is spent on music to be played at a talent show, at church, or at a recital.

Now that we are in the - literal - heat of summer, where do we go from here? With no performances on the horizon, what do kids prepare for?

There is great value in playing music for the love of music. Whether that is a solo for grandma, or a favorite movie theme to learn for fun - digging deep into that joy of music is what summer is all about.

That is exactly what the St. Michael Catholic School Band in Prior Lake did after their spring concert. We read new music for no reason other than to read new music for fun. The video you see below is not perfect, but it was the result of 2 rehearsals - and a whole lot of fun.

Enjoy “Riptide”, composed by Minnesota band director and composer Tim Smith!
