4 Easy Ways to Add Music into your Homeschool Day

Homeschool families balance many spinning plates in a given day. Everything from teaching ABC’s to long division to American history, and everything in between!

Music is an incredible way to enrich any child’s school day. Whether your child takes formal music classes or not, there are many ways to incorporate music as an art form into your home.

  1. Schedule practice time into your school day. Whether your child plays piano, guitar, a band instrument, or an orchestral instrument, regular practice allows your child to get the most out of their lesson time with their teacher. Plan practice time into your scheduled school day. This can be 15 minutes before lunchtime, a 10 minute brain break in the middle of your school day, or a 30 minute block at the end of the school day. Planning practice into your day will allow your child to continue to grow on their instrument.

  2. Sing your favorite songs together as a family. Whether you love singing folk songs, singing along with a favorite playlist, or hymns, singing as a family is an incredible way to build connection while also exploring music in a fun way. It doesn’t have to be anything formal, sometimes the best memories are made in the car singing to your favorite song!

  3. Attend a local performance. Many communities have community bands or choirs that put on performances throughout the year. Maybe you have a professional orchestra in your area - look at their schedules because many have concerts specifically planned for young people. Listening to live music is one of the best ways to support local musicians while also experiencing music in a unique way.

  4. Build music history and active music listening into your school day. Discovery of classical music as an art form is a wonderful way to help students learn the value of music, while learning the history behind the musical eras and compositions. Classical music is a bridge to many other subject areas including history, visual art, and religion.
